Although everyone’s circumstances will vary, from a family member accidentally backing into the door, or a severe storm damaging some panels. Most garage doors have an average lifespan of about 30 years provided they are maintained properly.   In any case, when is the right time to replace your garage door or should you simply repair it?  Here are a few things to consider to help you make the right choice.

Types of Damage that can occur to your garage door

Your garage door may only have minor damage, or it may be severely damaged.  Here is a quick guide to determine the extent of the damage your door may have:

  1. Minor – If your door does not have any structural damage but may be lacking in curb appeal, you can consider it to have minor damage. If this is the case, repairing the garage door is the better option.
  2. Moderate – If your door is warped over is rusting out, the structural integrity of your garage door may be compromised. When this occurs, outdoor elements such as rain and snow may be able to enter your garage. It is also possible that an intruder could gain access to your garage or home.
  3. Serious – If your door no longer opens or closes, gets stuck, or makes loud squealing noises, you should consider replacing it. You should just be aware that replacing the springs may resolve several of these issues.

The Extent of the Damage

If your garage door only has minor damage or simply needs a fresh coat of paint, then repairing it is probably the better option.  However, if you have cracked panels, or the door does not lift smoothly, then it may be time to consider having it replaced. If the damage is more than minor, it probably poses a significant safety risk to your family. Replacing it with a more sturdy, new garage door is the better option to protect your family.

Cost

You may decide when considering inflation that the cost of repairing would be better spent toward the purchase of a new door now.  High demand for materials like lumber and steel is currently up 25 & 40%, respectively.  The cost of a new garage door currently is anywhere between $200 and $10,000.   The price of materials is expected to continue to increase over the coming years.

The Age of the Door

If your garage door only has some minor damage but it has quite a few years on it, it may be time to replace it.   This is usually the case when the cost of repairing it just doesn’t make sense as you approach the average life span of the door.
